Since graduating from the American Academy of Art Chicago in 2009, local artist Carla Wyzgala’s “Carlations” have quickly became a staple in all the top-notch Artist Alleys at comic and anime conventions across the country and are featured at pop culture favorites such as Wizard World’s Comic Con and C2E2.
Using watercolor on hot pressed paper, she creates what she lovingly refers to as her sirens. She describes them as “seductive, tattooed ladies with a hint of fantastical elements”.
A Chicago girl through and through, her specialty sirens featuring the L map and the skyline, as well as her Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, Cubs and Sox pin up girls, are especially hard to miss at Chicagoland events. Although she does do custom orders, at Wizard World’s Chicago Comic Con Fan Fest, she laughed as she told me she had turned down a Green Bay Packers commission. Her face had #IRegretNothing written all over it and I wanted to high-five her.
Truly a woman of many talents, Carla also does wonders with acrylics and pencil and illustrates for the web comic Surreality.
You can follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or become a proud owner of a Carlations masterpiece by visiting her website or her Etsy shop. Every piece is created from original artwork and hand signed by Carla. Original paintings, small prints, posters, banners, phone cases and a photobook of her work are all available online and ship worldwide.
Of course, there’s nothing like seeing the art up close and personal and meeting the genius behind the canvas, so stop by her booth at C2E2 in April, Wizard World Comic Con Chicago in August or a slew of other upcoming shows all over the country.
